Title:  Faith!?

Text: Hebrews 11:1-2  1Now faith is being sure of what we hope fora and certain of what we do not see.b   2This is what the ancients were commended for.

Central Idea of the Text: The writer is attempting to explain and demonstrate to the readers; just exactly what Faith truly is and how it operates.

Central Idea of the Sermon: Give a quick summary of what faith is and how it operates.

Introduction: Earlier I mentioned that the concept of Faith is the very foundation of this Camp!  I mentioned That the key to being a TRUE HERO is faith, but you are all probably asking the exact same question right now.

TS: What is faith!?

1. Faith Trusts in Later (1a) (Psalm 9:10)

Exp: We can not predict the future.  But with Faith we trust that the future will happen.

Ill: When you put your money in a coke machine you have FAITH that your coke will come out. You don’t know for sure that when you hit that button that the coke will come out. Could be that it’s doesn’t have any more coke in it, the machine may be broken, or the machine could even be unplugged. Never the less we put our money in the slot with hope that we will receive what we are wanting.

Why? Because in the past you’ve seen it work just fine.

App: Faith goes beyond just blinding trusting something. Theologian Henry Thiessen said “Scriptural faith, therefore, is not the acceptance of a working hypothesis in religion, it is belief based on the best of evidence.” (Lectures in Systematic Theology, pg 272) (Psalm 9:10)

TS: But Faith doesn’t only deal with the future.

2. Faith confirms the Present

Exp: There are many things that are happening right here and right now that we do not see. But just because we don’t see them doesn’t mean you don’t believe in them.

Ill: Take a coke can and drink it till it is just under 1/3 full. (little over 2/3rds empty for you pessimistic people out there.) Tilt it on slightly and try to balance it on the lip of the bottom of the can and the first part of the can that starts to curve up. It BALANCES!

Most people don’t know how the can stays up. They just see that it does. They have faith that something is happening to keep it from toppling over and spilling out everywhere

Take ball and throw it up, what happens? It falls!  You can not see how gravity itself. But you do see the effects of it. Faith tells us that a ball falls to the ground because of the effect of gravity.

App: We don’t physically see God, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit. However, we do see the effects they have on the Earth and in our lives right here and right now.

TS: Of course now the question is, what does this have to do with being a true hero?

3.Faith in Christ is what makes you a true hero. (v 2)

Exp: Faith in Christ is what empowers Christians.

Ill: There is a League of super heroes called the “Green Lantern Corps” They have the special power rings that give them strength and amazing powers. If they didn’t have that ring they would just be normal people. Nothing special at all.  Faith is our ring of power! Faith in Christ is what gives us the strength, it’s what makes us special.

App: Small Faith can move mountains. (Matthew 17:20)

Through Faith we are saved (Eph 2:8)
