Ever seen a Light house? What’s the purpose of a light house?
For sailors it is a symbol of hope. When they find themselves out on the open seas, a storm tossing their ship back and forth like a rag doll. Waves so tall they dwarf their ship. To look up and see a small ray of light shinning through the darkness is the greatest joy of the moment. Because they know that even though things look horrible. Even though it looks like their is no hope, that light tells them there still is.
God has called everyone of us to be a light house. Our kids are starting school this next week. I can’t thing of a better place to set up a lighthouse than in a school. Bulling, peer preasures, stress, it’s a place that screams out “we need hope!” Last night in our KDG i explained to the kids that they are the Lighthouses for their schools.
Christ said in Matthew 5:14
You are the light of the world.
What makes us the light of the world is not our beautiful smiles and charming personalities though. What makes us a light is our faith! Our faith in Christ is what makes us a light to the world. Christ’s love and grace that resides in you is what radiates out to a world in darkness.
What’s interesting however is the second part verse. Christ goes from saying that we are a light to the world and then goes to say,
A city on a hill cannot be hidden.
In say things he says something that a lot of people are afraid of. If you are a Christian… then you can NOT hide your faith. It’s gonna come out at some point in some way. You might walk past a hill and not notice the city once maybe even twice if you are really non observant. But you have to be blind and def to not be able to see it eventually.
We continued on to verse 15 to find Christ saying
Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
What Christ is saying here is that your faith is not meant to be hidden. So dont’ even try! rather he wants you to share it. to put your faith out on display. It is here that the children and i discussed different ways of sharing your faith.
1. Sharing the Gospel through your actions (how you treat people)
2. Sharing the Gospel by straight up preaching
3. Sharing the Gospel through simple conversation about what God is doing in your life
We then moved on to verse 16
In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds
I stoped here and asked the kids “Why would God want other people to see your good works?” Of course the kids all had their own answers. But the fact of the matter was that i had not read the rest of the verse.
In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
He doesn’t ask us to show off for our sake but to let man see our good works so that we can point it all back to HIM. While God has given us many talents and abilities. While we can take those talents and skills and do very well for ourselves God has given them to us not for our sake but so we can Glorify God and point people back to Him. So that we can be that lighthouse in the darkness of the world and give them hope.
Of course the question now is,”how does this relate back to Unlikely Heroes?” This is exactly what Joseph did while he was going through all his trials he glorfied God. When they came to ask him to interpret dreams, before he uttered a word of interpretation he told them “God is the only one who can interpret dreams.
