Here is Dana’s sermon from this month’s BGMC service! she did a great bang up job 🙂
Text: Isaiah 58:10
10 and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry
and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.
Central Idea of Text: “As sin and sorrow dry the bones and weaken the strongest human constitution; so the duties of kindness and charity strengthen and refresh both body and mind. Those who do justly and love mercy, shall have the comfort, even in this world. Good works will bring the blessing of God, provided they are done from love to God and man, and wrought in the soul by the Holy Spirit.”
Central Idea of the Sermon: our faith is justified in working through love
Major Objective: The congregation will learn that the things we do out of love for God and for people prove our faith.
Introduction:have you ever seen a new kid? They usually sit alone because they don’t know anyone. Everyone is a little afraid to be friends w/ them. Why?
-they might be weird, it might not be cool.
Maybe that kid is the richest in the world maybe he doesn’t know if he’ll have any food today.
There are people all over the world, some are rich, some are poor, some are sad, some sit alone
Transition Sentence: whatever kind of people they are and whatever their need is Isaiah 58:10 tells us to spend ourselves for them.
Example: spend- give out, give away, use up. To put so much care into something that you don’t care if it makes you look silly or makes other people think you’re weird.
Illustration: Spending yourselves has to do with sitting by the new kid whether he’s cool or not, just to show him that God loves Him.
-It might mean making friends with someone who feels lonely, no matter what people think, even if they make fun of you.
-Spending yourselves could mean giving money to missions or giving part of our lunch to a hungry friend.
Application: we trust God to take care of us enough to help God take care of other people. We can stop worrying about ourselves and start taking care of the people around us. Spend ourselves means being willing to give everything away to make sure that other people are taken care of. Even when its hard.
Ask who will be willing to sit by a new kid, no matter what people think?
Who would be willing to give their money to people they don’t know, if it meant that person could eat or be safe?
Who would be willing to share their lunch with a friend, even if they were a little hungry?
Give a piece of rice for their hard times.
TS: what are we giving out when you spend yourselves?
Exp: your life. You are giving away things that you may need, so that someone else can know that God loves them.
(reputation- sitting by the new kid,
money- what if a new video game comes out and you cant get it bc you gave your money to missions?
Food- sharing lunch.)
Ill: who would be willing to do those things? ^^ repeat the questions? Think of new questions.
App: open yourself up to people. Don’t be scared to really care about people. Give your whole heart away to caring about people. Think about other people before you think of yourself.
TS: you don’t give yourself away for nothing God will change your night
III. Your night
Exp: anybody scared of the dark? Why?
Ill: hard times are kind of like the night for us. We can’t tell what will happen. We don’t know when it will end. We feel like we are alone.
App: your hard times will be turned into good times. God always makes everything work together for the good of those who love Him. He always repays our hard times with good times. All the bad stuff that happens to us makes us realize the great things that God does for us. When we do things for others, God always repays our hard times for good times.
Your dark will be turned to light.
our love for God and our trust in Him proves our faith. If we say we believe in Jesus, but we never do good things for people, we should really look at whether we really love God or not. If we love God, then we will love His people and show them that God loves them. We can do that by just making sure that the people around us have enough to eat.
Or by giving to missions.
Or by just being nice to people.
Refusing to call bad names or ignore people who are different
Ask questions again.
Ask everyone to come put all their bad times rice into a pot.
Every body has bad times, but we can all help each other out. We can all come together as people who love god like we did just now with the rice and be willing to help each other. Because even though we’ve had hard times, God will pay us back with good times. God will make sure that we are all taken care of. God will make sure that we all have enough. All that we need to do is spend ourselves on other people and God will turn our night into day.
Any body want some night and day rice?
