Big Prayers of Faith

This is another sermon from our Faith series. This one I start off with a story from the Talmud about a man of God named Honi. Now i must confess that i first heard of him in the book Circle Makers by Mark Batterson.Which by the way is a great book and i want to encourage you check it out.

sooo yeah here’s my notes

THE LEGEND OF HONI THE CIRCLE MAKER (ABBRIDGED VERSION OF MARK BATTERSON)

A devastating drought threatened to destroy a generation–the generation before Jesus.

Been a long time since anyone had heard from God.

But there was one man, an old sage who lived outside the walls of Jerusalem, who dared to pray anyway. His name was Honi. And even if the people could no longer hear God, he believed that God could still hear them.

Honi drew a circle in the sand. Then he dropped to his knees and raised his hands to heaven. With the authority of
the prophet Elijah who called down fire from heaven, Honi called down rain.

Lord of the Universe, I swear before your great name that I will not move from this circle until you have shown mercy upon your children.

Then it happened. raindrops descended to the earth. The people rejoiced over the rain, but Honi wasn’t satisfied with a sprinkle. Still kneeling within the circle, Honi lifted his voice over the sounds of celebration.

Not for such rain have I prayed, but for rain that will fill cisterns, pits, and caverns.

The sprinkle turned into such a torrential downpour that the people fled to the Temple Mount to escape the flash floods. Honi stayed and prayed inside his protracted circle.
Not for such rain have I prayed, but for rain of benevolence, benediction, and grace.

The rain came to calm. The rain seemed to soak not just the ground but the very spirits of those there.

Some within the Sanhedrin threatened excommunication because his prayer was too bold for their taste, but the miracle couldn’t be repudiated. Eventually, Honi the Circle Maker was honored for “the prayer that saved a generation.”

POINT OF STORY: God honored Honi’s prayers because he prayed big. Pray Specifics!

SCRIPTURES TO GO ALONG WITH POINT:

Story of Centurion:

Matt 8:5-10, 13
5 And when Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, imploring Him, 6 and saying, ” Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, fearfully tormented.” 7 Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.” 8 But the centurion said, ” Lord, I am not worthy for You to come under my roof, but just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 “For I also am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes, and to
another, ‘Come!’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.” 10 Now when Jesus heard this, He marveled and said to those who were following, “Truly I say to you, I have not found such great faith with anyone in Israel.
…13 And Jesus said to the centurion, “Go; it shall be done for you as you have believed.” And the servant was healed that very moment.

Healing of the Blind Men:

Matt 9:27-30
27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!” 28 When He entered the house, the blind men came up to Him,
and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to Him, “Yes, Lord.” 29 Then He touched their eyes, saying, “It shall be done to you according to your faith.” 30 And their eyes were opened.

CONCLUSION

God actually likes it when you pray specifics and when you pray BIG prayers. If you are praying things that are on God’s heart then He will be more than happy to give you what you ask.
